Getting the most out of your TNG networking meeting
Joining a networking group like TNG is a smart move for any business owner wanting to grow their business through connection, referrals, and support.
But joining a networking group isn’t about just turning up.
The real value of your membership comes when you show up with intention, engage meaningfully, and make the most of each meeting.
Each TNG meeting is a chance to get your business in front of others, refine your pitch, offer help, and learn from fellow members.
It’s an opportunity to build strong, trusting relationships that lead to genuine referrals and valuable collaborations.
But if you’re distracted, inconsistent, or unsure how to make the most of your time, those opportunities can quietly pass you by.
To make it easier for you, we’re sharing simple but effective tips to help you get more from every meeting.
Whether you’re new to networking or a long-time member, these reminders will help you build better connections, grow your confidence, and generate more business through your group.
Attend every networking meeting - and arrive early
Consistency is key when it comes to networking. When members see you regularly, you stay top of mind for referrals and collaboration. That starts with simply showing up.
TIP:
Set a recurring calendar reminder so you don’t miss a meeting, and treat it as a non-negotiable business appointment.
Can’t make it? That’s all good, we won’t pressure you to attend. But maybe think about asking another member to give your 60 second introduction or send someone else in your place.
Arriving early gives you valuable time to chat informally with other members and any visitors. These relaxed conversations are often where relationships are built and where your next great referral may begin.
Limit distractions and be fully present
It’s easy to get caught up in emails, calls, or last-minute tasks before or even during a meeting—but staying focused is worth it.
Turn your phone to Do Not Disturb, close your laptop, and give the meeting your full attention.
When you’re fully present, you not only retain more but you also show others that you value their time and input. That respect builds trust and strengthens relationships.
Say yes to your 10-minute presentation early
The ten-minute presentation is one of the most powerful tools you have in TNG. It’s your chance to educate the group about who you are, what you do, and how others can confidently refer to you.
Don’t wait months to take your turn.
The sooner you present, the sooner your group understands your business and starts spotting opportunities for you. Treat your presentation as a chance to teach, not just to sell. Share stories, examples, and specific ways people can help you.
Book one-on-one meetings between sessions
Group meetings are great, but one-on-one conversations are where real trust and understanding are built.
These catch-ups help you learn the ins and outs of someone’s business and give them the chance to do the same for you.
One-on-ones help move your relationships from casual to connected. You’ll find it’s easier to refer and be referred when you’ve taken the time to connect outside the group setting. Ask for what you need - specifically
It’s one thing to say, “I’m looking for new clients.” It’s another to say, “I’m looking to connect with HR managers in companies with 20–50 staff in Auckland .” The more specific your ask, the easier it is for others to help you.
Not sure how to phrase your ask?
Think about your ideal client, where they spend time, and what kind of problems they’re trying to solve. You can also ask for help, feedback, introductions, or collaboration opportunities—not just referrals.
Learn from others’ wins and challenges
Every meeting is full of knowledge, but you’ve got to listen for it.
When members share a success or a struggle, there’s usually a takeaway in it for everyone.
Pay attention to what’s working (or not) for others. It might spark a new idea for your business, shift your thinking, or open the door to a future partnership.
Think beyond referrals - collaborate
Networking isn’t just about passing names. Some of the most rewarding outcomes come from partnerships—two businesses working together on a shared project, offering bundled services, or referring across industries in a more strategic way.
Keep an open mind. If someone’s in a similar or complementary field, ask yourself how you might work together rather than compete.
Collaboration helps you reach new audiences, boost your credibility, and create opportunities you might not have considered alone.
What you put in is what you’ll get out
It’s a simple truth in networking: the more engaged and generous you are, the more value you’ll get from your group.
TNG is designed to be a place where businesses grow through real connection. That growth happens when you turn up, tune in, and take action.
Make the most of every meeting, and you’ll build not just your business but a trusted community of people who genuinely want to see you succeed.
